The Youth Music Initiative (YMI) is a nationwide funding programme administered by Creative Scotland and encompassing all 32 local authorities. YMI was established to support and develop the provision of opportunities for music making and tuition for young people across Scotland.
We work closely with Falkirk Council Children’s Services on the delivery of the Falkirk YMI programme, which has three strands:
Outreach Programme
Our team of professional musicians work in partnership and in class with primary and nursery teachers to enhance and develop musicianship skills and the music curriculum for children across the Falkirk area. The outreach programme has proved highly successful, and has made a very positive impact on a large number of pupils over the years. The musicians deliver themed projects that offer pupils the chance to explore, develop and enhance their creativity and music skills.
Falkirk Traditional Music Project
This project offers pupils from P4 – S6 the opportunity to learn a traditional Scottish instrument, with instrument loan and tuition provided at no cost. We currently offer after-school lessons taught by our team of musicians in the Mandolin, Chanter, Accordion, Whistle, Bagpipes, Fiddle and Bodhran. Within the project there is opportunity for pupils to progress into one of our Trad Bands. As part of these bands, pupils have the opportunity to perform at various concerts and events throughout the year. The Trad Music project takes place weekly at Falkirk High School. Please contact falkirktrad@gmail.com for more information.
Tune-In
Our musicians support pupils' music development within school based SEN areas as well as the Additional Support for Learning schools in the Falkirk area. The musicians work with pupils to introduce them to instrumentation and music technology, to help increase confidence and communication skills, and support the development of life skills.
