“My parents couldn’t afford books, but they understood they were the passport to better life chances than they’d had. Libraries open windows that let us all fly.” Val McDermid, best-selling author of the Wire in the Blood series and Karen Pirie novels
Why do we love libraries?
Is it because they're free to use? The bags of resources for all ages and interests? The helpful library staff? Or because libraries are safe, welcoming spaces for EVERYONE?
Whatever the reason, to mark 100 years of the National Library of Scotland in 2025, we’re celebrating libraries across the nation.
We want to know what your library means to you and encourage you to spread the library love to friends and family who don’t know what they’re missing.
In libraries, from now until the end of the year, you’ll find boards to add your library love notes and frames and backgrounds for snapping a selfie of your visit.
We’d love you to tag us on social media too, whether it’s pics of your trip to the library, your borrowed books, or just a few nice words.
But the most important thing you can do is to USE YOUR LIBRARY.
- Borrow up to 30 items, there’s no late fees.
- Join a library group, or attend an event.
- Spend the day with us: grab a hot drink, read, try a jigsaw…
- Enjoy our dedicated children’s areas with your family. Cuddle up with a book, try a treasure hunt or draw or colour.
- Use our wi-fi or PCs and charge your device.
- Research your family history.
Struggling to find the time to visit? Go digital! There are apps for reading, listening and learning.
