Falkirk Science Festival: Rebel Without a Cause on 35mm (PG)

Screen superstar James Dean defined the teenage rebel in this melodramatic tale of youth revolt. Screening on 35mm as part of Falkirk Science Festival with an introduction by Malcolm McMillan (University of Strathclyde) on the science of the teenage brain.

Dean plays vulnerable and good-looking Jim Stark – a new-in-town “juvenile delinquent”, buffeted by raging passions, and at odds with the restrictive older generation. At the age of 24, this was only Dean’s second film, but his performance as the misunderstood youth was widely praised and has passed into movie legend as the ultimate in cool. Less than one month after the film’s release Dean died in a car crash, cementing his iconic status and enduring association with the rebellious teen.

Malcolm’s talk will examine the workings of the adolescent brain and debunk some common myths about teenagers.

“The teen angst melodrama to end them all, and Dean's performance established him as an icon, a legend and a myth.” Film4

“Dean's finest film, hardly surprisingly in that Ray was one of the great '50s directors.” Geoff Andrew, Time Out

“A movie for anyone who's ever been a teenager. 5 stars” BBC.com
