Fisherfield Forest, that huge tract of undeveloped land between Loch Maree and Loch Broom, doesn’t have may trees but it does have lots of cracking remote mountains – five Munros and a Corbett for our trip. The whole hill circuit is a classic and is on all Munro ticker’s list. It’s a multi-day backpacking adventure of the very best kind.

Day one – 7.7km with 120 metres of ascent. Drive up to Dundonell. We’ll stop in Aviemore on the way up for lunch. The walk in is on a good track which ends up at Achneigie. We’ll stop at the woods by the bend in the river and set up camp there. This is an easy first day, which is just as well because the following one is epic.

Day two – 17.7km with 2210 metres of ascent. We ford the Abhainn Strath na Sealga then head up the shoulder of Beinn a’ Chlaidhiemh, the Corbett. Then it’s up and over Sgurr Ban, Mullach Coire Mhic Fearchair and Beinn Tarsuinn, then dropping down a bit before heading up A’ Mhaighean and Ruadh Stac Mor – all stunning Munros. There is a spot north of the last hill which is nearby and can take tents, so we’ll set up there for the night. Sleep will be welcome after such a long day working the legs.

Day three – 15.2km with 360metres of ascent. To get back to our starting point we need to walk down the great stalker’s paths this area is renowned for and also ford two substantial rivers, another experience which Fisherfield is renowned for. We also get to pop in to iconic Shenavall bothy on the way out.

Our route relies on us carrying all our equipment with us over the high tops so we can be flexible with where we camp. This has worked well in the past but it does mean that participants need to be fit enough to complete the trip and be organised so they are travelling light.
