Reel Women Season: The Piano with intro by Clare Grogan

Welcome to a specially selected season of four films presented by this month’s celebrity guest curator: Clare Grogan.
Clare has worked extensively in Music, Film, Television, Theatre and Radio for 30+ years. The summer she left school her band Altered Images were signed to Epic Records and Clare appeared in the BAFTA winning comedy Gregory’s Girl directed by Bill Forsyth.
Clare has presented film, travel, cooking and music shows for TV and radio and had roles in dozens of TV and Radio Dramas, including Skins, Eastenders, Red Dwarf, Father Ted and Still Game.

Message from Clare Grogan about this film: “Nothing prepared me for the overwhelming impact of watching The Piano again, I was simply blown away by its beauty, power and staggering performances. Writer/director Jane Campion's sensual and brutal portrayal of a woman trapped in a marriage of convenience is a masterclass in film making. There is however nothing convenient about the predicament that Holly Hunter finds herself in as the Scottish mute pianist Ada sold by her father into a marriage to colonist Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill) that takes her and daughter (Anna Paquin) to the other side of the world. New Zealand provides a breath-taking backdrop to this dark and mysterious period piece. After being dumped on the beach with their belongings and Ada's piano, her husband-to-be, Alisdair, refuses to haul her Baby Grand through the rainforest to her new home – not a good start to the relationship shall we say. But in walks Baines (Harvey Keitel) – an associate of Neill’s – who rescues the piano and instantly falls for Ada. What unfolds is almost impossible to describe effectively... Passionate, fierce and truly unique, no wonder it won a ton of awards. Not forgetting the truly inspired score by Michael Nyman.”
