Rough Bounds High Tops Trip - Four Day Trip

£180

Big rough hills in remote locations are achievable if the planning is good. We’ve planned this three Munro - two Corbett trip to have a separate travel day up and back from our bothy base. This way we have a couple of days in the middle where we can concentrate on the high tops. And these renowned Glen Dessary mountains require a lot of time and effort to complete. To maximise our time in the area we will do a couple of smaller hills on the final day before heading back home.

We’ll be based at A’ Chuil bothy for three nights. We’ll need to carry tents in with us regardless. But it’s only a couple of hours walk from the road on a good track so we will be able to carry what we need for our stay.

Day 1 – Afternoon start. Drive to the end of Loch Arkaig via Spean Bridge chippy. Walk into the bothy area and set up camp (5.8km with 150 metres of ascent).

Day 2 – Sgurr na Coireachan, Garbh Chioch Mhor & Sgurr na Ciche (18km with 1470 metres of ascent). These three Rough Bounds Munros make for a classic, tough outing. Our start from A’ Chuil bothy takes a chunk out of the usual walk in - but it’s still a strenuous hill day. Lots of ascent over rough terrain to tick the summits, followed by an equally tough descent to the path back to the bothy.

Day 3 – Bidean a’ Chabair & Carn Mor (16.5km with 1550 metres of ascent). The roughness continues with this two Corbetts outing. Note that there’s a bit more ascent on this route, and the drop and reascent between the summits is slab bang in the middle of the Rough Bounds country – so expect more of the previous days’ fun and games, but this time with no path. There are fine paths along both hills’ ridges though, so that’s a bonus.

Day 4 – Pack up camp and walk out to the road. We’ll drive back along the Arkaig road, park up and ascend Sgurr Coinnich, a Graham, and Geal Charn, A Corbett (12.5km with 1050 metres of ascent). It’s a smaller day than the previous two but we will have tired legs. Expect to be back in the Central Belt by mid-evening.

Previous hill walking experience and a good level of hill fitness is essential
