"Beware! Excitement awaits you!

Eerie mystery that will send shivers down your spine! Daring drama that will chill you with its thrills as it warms you with its heart-throbs."

So said the bill-boards in 1929 and we couldn't agree more! This cracking thriller mystery flick reunited the director and star of HippFest favourite The Cat and the Canary (1927) celebrated German filmmaker Paul Leni and one of the silent era's most popular stars Laura La Plante.

La Plante plays Doris, the lead actress in a play called The Snare. Her co-star dies a mysterious death on stage, but when his body disappears the case goes cold. Years later the victim's friend gathers the original cast together and revives the show in an attempt to solve the crime. But dark and supernatural forces are at work, seemingly determined that the show should not go on.

This is an entertaining and stylish whodunit, making the most of both the suspenseful play-within-a-play and the "real" murder mystery unfolding off-stage. Expect a dressing room full of suspects, secret passages, and ghostly apparitions.

We are delighted to welcome back the popular and skillful musical duo: Jane Gardner and Hazel Morrison, who will provide thrilling live piano and percussion accompaniment.

Dir. Paul Leni | US | 1929 | cert. 12 | b&w / English intertitles | 1h 29m
With: Laura La Plante, Montagu Love, Roy D'Arcy, Margaret Livingston

Performing live: Jane Gardner (piano), Hazel Morrison (percussion)
An acclaimed composer and pianist, Jane Gardner has delighted many silent cinema audiences with her original and sympathetic accompaniments. She has performed at HippFest since 2012 with percussionist Hazel Morrison, including acclaimed accompaniment for The Black Pirate, The Goose Woman, Earth, Filibus, Seven Footprints to Satan and our Saturday morning Jeely Jar screenings for families.  Jane was commissioned by HippFest with funds from the PRS for a live tour of Dragnet Girl which screened in venues across Scotland.
